I am so drawn to textiles of different patterns, colors and textures. Using varied handwoven fabric by the yard as decorative accents is one of my favorite ways to design a home. From mix-match pillowcases and window drapery, to upholstery textiles, every home ends up with its own unique combination that makes it so special. Deep down I’m like a kid in a candy store when it comes to textile. But with a few simple steps it becomes easy to pick designer throw pillow combinations and mix textiles like a pro.
I have rounded up some of my favorite neutral textile combinations using black and white textiles to inspire your living room décor ideas or help with choosing textile combinations for your bedroom. Give it a shot and I hope it makes navigating the world of textiles easier and more fun!
Striped textiles are some of my favorites. They’re easy to begin with and work beautifully in many décor styles. They make for a great starting point. Tip: Pick two different scales of your textile pattern. As an example, I combined striped textiles of two different widths. If you are picking textiles for pillow cases, use wide and narrow stripes in the same color way on different pillows or even together on the same pillow. If you are selecting pillows and linen for your room, pick a different stripe for the duvet and the pillow. It is an easy way to create visual interest with the same, consistent pattern.

Layer in a textile in a deeper and a coordinating pattern or solids to offset the neutrals and complete the set of pillows for your couch or bed. The darker tone contrasts and elevates the lighter neutrals and soft ivory’s while grounding the combination. In this example, we wanted to create a decorative pillow combination and picked a black textile with a checkered woven pattern that mixed well with the ticking stripes of the white textile.

Go bold by adding an unexpected element with a different pattern or texture in the same color palette. For this pillow combination we added a checkered plaid pattern, to break the monotony of the stripes by adding a new texture. It elevates the whole collection by creating a more eclectic, designer throw pillow combination. This works very well when picking textiles for big sofas and upholstered pieces for a collected look.

Layer in a few textiles that bridge any wide gaps between the colors in the room’s palette. it’s a great way to add warmth, especially when picking textiles for a more relaxed vibe or a designing a cozy bedroom. While black and white is a classic, we threw in a grey plaid textile to add comfort to the formal contrast. Use it as a two sides bed blanket or a coordinating ottoman textile to bring together a designed look to your living room décor.

It doesn’t always have to be a match. Don’t be afraid to add a pop of your favorite color for the perfect finishing touch. Neutral or black and white color palettes are amongst the friendliest. Adding some color can work very well to bring personality to your space. We picked a warm terracotta for a farmhouse style living room pillow combination. While black and white stands out by itself, the pop of terracotta really uplifts it and brings warmth.
All steps and tips aside, some of the best textile or pillow combination ideas are not to matchy-matchy. Don’t hesitate to put them together and look at them in a few days again, if it still pleases your eye you’ve nailed it!
